Upgrade to Ruby/Amazon 0.9.2

2007-12-09

Many users of Alexandria on Debian and Ubuntu systems have been reporting problems with Amazon lookups when using amazon.de

We recently tracked the root cause of the problem: an old version of Ruby/Amazon which is the library we use for interfacing with Amazon. The commonly available version on Debian and Ubuntu systems is the Debian package for libamazon-ruby 0.9.0 This version contains a bug (to do with handling HTTP redirects) which prevents it from working correctly with Amazon sites other than amazon.com

The new version, Ruby/Amazon 0.9.2, available from the Ruby/Amazon website fixes this problem. This fix has been available for over a year, but by some quirk of packaging priorities, has not made its way downstream until now.

No package for this version is available in official Debian or Ubuntu repositories, but you can download our own Ruby/Amazon 0.9.2 deb file which we created for our users on Debian and Ubuntu.

Sorry it took so long to track down all the bugs reporting amazon.de problems to this single cause, and thanks to mschu for helping us find it when working on bug #8647
